MOVING TO PANAMA
A practical starting point
Use this guide to frame the right questions about residency, tax, healthcare, property and Chiriquí life before speaking with licensed advisers.
PLAN WITH EVIDENCE
Attractive advantages deserve careful context.
Panama can be appealing to retirees, investors, remote professionals and families. But immigration residency, tax residency and home-country tax obligations are different questions.
This site links the headline claims to primary or authoritative sources and avoids guaranteeing outcomes that depend on personal facts.
CORE VALUE PILLARS
Six planning facts to investigate.
Use each source as a starting point, then obtain advice for your nationality, income and move plan.
01
Dollarized economy
Panama uses the U.S. dollar as its primary means of payment; the balboa remains fixed at one balboa per U.S. dollar.
02
Territorial tax framework
Panama generally taxes Panama-source income rather than worldwide income. Source rules and home-country obligations can change the result.
03
Pensionado pathway
The published Pensionado requirements include a lifetime pension or annuity of at least US$1,000 per month, with additional requirements and dependant rules.
04
Friendly Nations pathway
The current Friendly Nations process includes provisional and permanent stages and qualifying economic or professional ties.
05
Private healthcare
Pacífica Salud in Panama City has a long-standing collaboration with Johns Hopkins Medicine International. Care options and costs vary by city, provider and insurance.
06
Pensionado discounts
Eligible Pensionado residents can access statutory discounts across several categories. Exact application and documentation should be confirmed.
WHY CHIRIQUÍ
A food-producing province with genuine lifestyle range.
Chiriquí’s volcanic soils and highland climate support vegetables, fruit, dairy, cattle, flowers and globally recognized specialty coffee. Families can also research private-school options in and around the province’s main communities.
Air quality can be very good in highland areas, but real-time and historical measurements vary by station and season. We link to current IQAir data instead of calling any location “the cleanest in the world.”
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Important details before you act.
Residency, property and language questions need more than a one-line sales answer.
Do I have to live in Panama full-time to keep permanent residency?
Not necessarily, but Panama immigration law lists absence of more than two years as a potential reason to cancel permanent residency unless the absence is justified and authorized. Rules can vary by category, so confirm your travel plan with a Panamanian immigration lawyer.
Can a foreigner buy property in Panama?
Foreigners can buy titled property in much of Panama. Article 291 of the Constitution restricts foreign ownership within ten kilometres of international borders, and island property has additional conditions. Use an independent lawyer for title and location review.
Is language a barrier in Chiriquí?
Spanish is the official language. English is common in some expat, tourism, medical and professional settings, especially around Boquete, but availability varies. A bilingual local guide makes the scouting process easier.
Is this a real estate sales tour?
No. The tour is a location and daily-life orientation service. If you find an area that feels right, we can introduce you to an independent real estate professional; you remain free to choose your own advisers.
Can the day include healthcare, schools and daily essentials?
Yes. Your route can be shaped around hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, supermarkets, restaurants, private schools, golf, cycling areas and residential communities. Access inside facilities or meetings may require separate appointments.
